My Flying Story

My Great Grandfather's 1959 Comanche 250

The passion for aviation started with my grandfather (AKA Papa) told many a tale of he and his father’s quests of flying. My great grandfather was a private pilot, who owned a Cherokee 140 and then moved up to a 1959 Piper Comanche 250.

Papa also taught me how to make paper airplanes when I was 4 years old. It didn’t take long with YouTube before I was making paper airplanes that could out fly anything my grandfather could make.

I remember mom and dad driving by Richmond Field to watch the gliders. We would see the gliders flying around our house in Gregory Michigan. Gliders and powered aircraft all seemed to fly around our house and dip their wing at me if we were outside watching.

It did not take long before we stopped by Richmond Field to take a ride in a glider. This is where I met Safu, a retired airline pilot. Safu has flown everything from the Constellations to the Boeing 747’s. He has enjoyed quite the career as a commercial pilot, but now he enjoys the serenity and sheer fun of gliding.
